What we’re about
The site always speaks first. Each place comes with its own climate, views, history, and social context. We begin by listening to what is already there — drawing inspiration from the specific conditions that shape how a building should sit, feel, and function.
Alongside this, we consider the idea: what story does the client want to share? Whether personal or commercial, ambitious or quiet, this intent gives direction to the work.
To these two we bring our own philosophy — one grounded in observation, simplicity, and a belief that good design grows out of real conditions. We look for solutions that are appropriate rather than impressive, lasting rather than loud.
This conversation — between place, idea, and approach — begins on the first day and continues until the last detail is resolved on site. It is a process of finding what fits, not imposing what doesn’t.
We apply ourselves to a variety of typologies, from private homes to hotels to larger-scale planning work. But in every case, the emphasis is on designing with, not over, the context in which the project sits.
We believe the best results come from clear thinking and close collaboration. The goal is always the same: to shape spaces that feel right — for the people who use them, the landscapes they occupy, and the life within and without.
Founder and DESIGN Director
Mark Bellingan
After nearly a decade at several award-winning practices, architect Mark Bellingan founded Common Architecture in 2014. Since then, the studio has worked across a range of building types — always with an emphasis on design that responds to its context.
Mark brings a strong understanding of the construction process, allowing each project to explore materiality, sustainability, and affordability in practical terms. His approach centres on clarity, restraint, and close collaboration with clients.
The aim is consistent: to create architecture that celebrates the experience of space, and the life within.
Beyond his role at Common Architecture, Mark maintains an active presence in the wider design community as a mentor, educator, and occasional urban explorer.

Leigh Bellingan
Since joining her brother Mark at Common Architecture, Leigh has played a key role in shaping projects that reflect a shared commitment to context, collaboration, and craft.
Leigh leads the interior design work at Common Architecture, where she brings a refined eye for materiality, atmosphere, and spatial rhythm. Trained as both an architect and interior designer, her approach bridges the conceptual and the tactile — ensuring that interiors are not separate from the building, but integral to it.
Leigh’s work is rooted in observation and restraint. She draws on everyday references and regional traditions, assembling spaces that are coherent, well-considered, and quietly expressive. Her focus is on how spaces are lived in — how they age, how they feel, and how they support daily life.
