Cabin Niseko

Shaped by Winter

Set within the forested mountains of Hokkaido, Cabin Niseko sits in a landscape defined by deep snow, cool summers and long winters. Designed for a developer with a deep appreciation for craft and materiality, the cabin offers a retreat for families and friends returning from days spent on the mountain. Though compact in size, the 140-square-metre cabin accommodates three bedrooms and generous shared living spaces beneath a simple double-pitched roof.

The design began with the character of the place itself. Surrounded by conifers and framed by the northern sky, the cabin was conceived as a quiet presence within the landscape rather than an object apart from it.

Of Forest and Stone

The material palette draws directly from the landscape that surrounds the cabin. Inspired in part by the work of Isamu Noguchi, the design explores the relationship between landscape, architecture and interior, seeking a sense of continuity between them.

Oak runs throughout the cabin, bringing warmth and continuity to floors, ceilings and joinery. Dark stone-like surfaces anchor the spaces, while moments of terracotta introduce a subtle warmth. Linen curtains soften the light and woven cane screens provide separation without enclosure. Together, these materials create an atmosphere that feels grounded in its setting.

A Place to Return To

The plan separates retreat from gathering. Bedrooms occupy the lower level, accessed from a sheltered entrance designed for snowy winters and slow arrivals. Above, a single open living space brings people together around the kitchen, dining area and lounge. Large openings frame views of the surrounding mountains while allowing daylight to move gently through the space.

The cabin asks little of its occupants. It provides warmth through the winter months and a calm place to return to between days outdoors. More than a holiday home, it is a setting for shared meals, quiet mornings and time spent together in the landscape.
